The courage to act for the planet

A co-production between Théâtre de la Vieille 17 and Théâtre populaire d’Acadie.

BACKGROUND

In 2015, Geneviève Pineault discovered Amphibien, the first novel by New Brunswick author Carla Gunn, in a translation by Myriam Legault. A story with an environmental flavor featuring Phin (Felix in the theatrical adaptation), a 9 year old animal rights’ activist. It’s both a book about the environment and the story of a boy who has difficulty adapting to his own family and school environment. Phin is a symbol of our times – an eco-anxious child so overwhelmed with information about the planet’s disasters that his childhood is stolen from him. Amphibien tackles animal rights, activism, schoolyard bullying and more, all from the point of view of a child, who provides a unique and original narrative voice.

Following the creation of Intrusions in 2022-2023, Théâtre populaire d’Acadie and Théâtre de la Vieille 17 are once again collaborating on this new ‘all-audience’ production, for youth AND adult audiences.

SYNOPSIS

At the age of nine, Felix has an encyclopedic knowledge of the animal kingdom as well as nature. The fate of the planet is of utmost concern to him. At school as at home, his questions, logic and arguments defy the established order. More often than not, they baffle or frustrate the adults around him.

One day, his teacher introduces a new ‘pet’ to the class: a White tree frog from Australia, imprisoned in an aquarium! That is the last straw! Felix and his best friend Oli have no choice. They have to act!

A show for adults, accessible to those aged 10 and over.
